Something Blue

No doubt, you’ve heard the wedding rhyme about something blue. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Traditions like these may not have the same significance they did centuries ago, but tradition still stands. In this post, I’ll talk about something blue and give you some ideas for your own wedding.

Who Gives The Bride Something Blue

Traditionally, something blue was the garter belt. It was usually given by the bride’s mother or another married woman. Tradition states that gifts coming from a married woman would bring the bride luck on her wedding day since the woman who is married has luck to pass on.

Today, something blue can be given by anyone. The bride can easily provide her own something blue, but gifts are always nice. When I photograph weddings, I usually see the maid of honor or a bridesmaid provide this gift. Sometimes, it’s even a family heirloom with significant sentimental value.

Something Blue Gift Ideas

If you’re wondering what to give as a “something blue ” gift, I’ve got some ideas for you. These are a few of my favorites that I’ve seen at weddings that I’ve photographed.

  • Jewelry – necklace, bracelet, anklet, ring, etc.
  • Garter Belt – keep tradition alive!
  • Handkerchief – embroidered with blue

Family Heirlooms

Family heirlooms are probably the most meaningful “something blue” items I’ve seen. It could be as simple as an old ribbon that your great-great-grandmother wore on her wedding day. Or maybe you have your grandma’s watch that’s studded with sapphires.

If you don’t have family heirlooms, a blue flower in your bouquet can be an easy way to add a touch of blue. Not sure what color you want your bridesmaids to wear? How about blue?

There are so many ways to incorporate blue into your wedding. How much blue you add is up to you.

Something Blue Weddings

If you absolutely love blue or you just don’t know what color you want your wedding to be, why not make it blue? It really is a lovely color and different shades of blue go well together.

Some ways to incorporate blue would be in the bridesmaid dresses or flowers. You could have blue be your accent color for the invitations, making the envelopes blue or the font. Reception decor and linens can be blue. The possibilities are endless. Get creative and have fun!
